Global Women for Peace United Against NATO present this informative and important webinar discussing aspects of the work of John W Burton
An Australian diplomat, Burton was experienced in Cold War diplomacy, civil strife, reforming organizations, resistance to change. He had ‘been there’ and he found much to criticize. He knew that words and ideas were not enough: there needed to be instruments of change.
Please register in advance here: Zoom.
This webinar will outline the main principles of his pioneering work. Burton was key to the foundation of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) in 1964, and of the Conflict Research Society in the UK. He thought that words and ideas were not enough: there needed to be instruments of change.

Thanks to Kristine Karch for these great, historic t-shirts!
This time it was at Lakenheath UK International Peace Camp, April 2026, where four women active in GWUAN were present:Ā
Throughout the week peace campaigners raised awareness of the risks posed by nuclear weapons, celebrated and promoted alternative options.
They were joined on Saturday April 4 by coaches from around the country, musicians Seize the Day and speakers from CND, World BEYOND War and from Spain and Finland.Ā Ā
Hosted on behalf of GWUAN by UNAC – The United National Antiwar Coalition
GWUAN investigates thoughts for a more progressive future and examines Neutrality and Non-Alignment more closely.
Neutrality is a complex consideration. The search for a common security structure and the overwhelming desire of the people for peaceful cooperation between sovereign states, for collaboration instead of competition, and for public spending to be on human and planetary needs and not bullets and bombs, drives us to enter 2026 with a progressive vision.
Brief introduction and moderation ā Pippa Bartolotti
Speakers:
The current total of nuclear warheads in the world is 12,241 You only need 100 of these to make the planet uninhabitable! Spending on these arsenals is more than £100 billion a year in maintenance alone.
Nuclear weapons are the most inhumane and indiscriminate weapons ever created. They violate international law, cause severe environmental damage, undermine national and global security, and divert vast public resources away from meeting human needs. They must be eliminated. We know, that by publicly examining the outcomes of a renewed nuclear arms race, more people will understand the dangerous implications and utter waste of money of such folly, and turn that knowledge into action, because the only thing governments are afraid of is a mass of people with strong opinions.
In October 2025 President Donald Trump announced that the US will start testing nuclear weapons regularly. This nuclear testing rhetoric is counterproductive, and dangerous and gives permission for others to do the same.

Life is changing within the broad “Global South”, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean with new revitalizing political determination for inclusive societies, changing from single focused private commerce and development, geared primarily for profitability and luxury living. Newly elected presidents in Latin America are seeking equity for their societies as demonstrated in Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Honduras, Chile, Grenadines, Nicaragua, Mexico etc. Some of these nations such as Mexico have exceeded expectations and goals promised by their citizens, becoming a global model for developing land and water and public infrastructure resulting in higher employment and productivity with better benefits for the marginalized. A vital issue for Latin America and the Caribbean, discussed in the webinar tonight, is the looming threat of NATO bases and military intervention by the US and its Southern Command operation, or by expansion of another NATO country into Latin America.
